With a specialty in Social Impact Bonds, author, inventor, social entrepreneur, and former national spokesperson for MENTOR: The National Mentoring Partnership, Ean Garrett, J.D., has committed his life to social impact. In 2008, Ean graduated from Howard University with a Bachelor's of Arts degree in Political Science and Legal Communications. In 2010, he completed coursework at CBL International Law & Business School in Dubai, U.A.E. In 2011, Ean graduated with a Juris Doctor degree from the University of Nebraska-College of Law.
Ean has previously served as a Congressional lobbyist on behalf of Trio/Upward Bound Programs. For 11 years, Ean served as a national spokesperson for MENTOR: The National Mentoring Partnership, presenting keynotes on behalf of the organization at various venues throughout the country, such as Viacom Headquarters and the Navy Pier in NY, NY, as well as the historic Lincoln Theater and Library of Congress in Washington, DC. Ean has been recognized in Imagine magazine, Mott Mosaic magazine, and has also been featured in the Handbook of Youth Mentoring by David L. Dubois.
In January 2013, Ean was honored by the City of Omaha for his Service, Leadership and Advocacy in the areas of Mentoring, Education, and the Empowerment of Children. In 2014, in his Executive leadership role at Infinite 8 Institute, Ean received the Director's Coin Award by the Nebraska Department of Health & Human Services. He spends his free time writing, blogging, and advocating on behalf of social impact initiatives.
Mary Ferdig, PhD - Sustainability Leadership & Change Consultant
Mary Ferdig, Ph.D., is co-founder and president/CEO of the Sustainability Leadership Institute, a 501(c)3 dedicated to working with leaders on the edge of change who seek new and expanded approaches for generating sustainable solutions to complex local and global dilemmas. SLI and its partners have assisted a wide range of sustainability leaders through the complexities of social change in organizations and communities of all sizes.
An Iowa farm girl, Ferdig and her partner of 51 years have co-parented a scientist, a work-people process analyst, a website designer/architect, and an international development professional. Their progeny are now parents of 11 rather remarkable grandchildren (in Ferdig’s humble view) who, among seven billion others, are inheriting this Earth we are leaving to them. Ferdig acquired a BA degree in communication studies and psychology (UNO, 1980), an MA in communication studies with an emphasis in conflict negotiation and organizational communication (UNO, 1985), and a PhD in leadership and social change with a complexity science emphasis (Benedictine University, Chicago, 2001). She has accumulated 30+ years’ experience as an educator and leadership and organizational development professional.
Ferdig is the author of a forthcoming book, Generative Communication: the Essence of Sustainability Leadership. Ferdig advocates for an evolving paradigm of thinking and generative communication practices grounded in complexity-minded principles of self-responsibility; self-discipline; and courageous, humility-based, conscious participation in the evolving web of life on Earth.
Walter L. Battle, M.S. - Project Management Consultant
Walter L. Battle is a graduate of the University of Minnesota and has a master’s degree in Business management from Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota. He currently is a business manager for a group of companies that are successfully doing their part to help the planet by introducing their customers to energy saving LED lighting technology. Walter has recently tutored ESL university students in composition and history courses. He has extensive business experience in corporate America and as a successful entrepreneur. Walter had a successful career with the IBM Corporation and was the recipient of the IBM Means Service award.
Walter successfully owned and managed a multi-million dollar multi-family housing complex. His skills as a business owner and experience as a community relations expert earned him recognition with city, county, and state agencies. He received the Everyday Angels award from the Guild Incorporated of Minnesota for his contributions to the community and the families that lived in and around his businesses. Walter is a former board member of Public Arts Saint Paul and of the Wilder Square Co-op.
